はじめに |
今から約5.5億年前に存在したゴンドワナ超大陸は、西ゴンドワナ大陸と東ゴンドワナ大陸の一回の衝突により形成されたと考えられてきた。しかし近年の岩石学的・年代学的研究により、ゴンドワナ大陸は多数の小大陸や火山弧が繰り返し衝突することにより、約2億年をかけて徐々に成長したことが明らかになりつつある。本研究の対象地域であるクーンガ造山帯は、ゴンドワナ大陸形成の最末期(今から約5.7-5.3億年前)に形成された造山帯と考えられており、その痕跡は現在の南極、スリランカ、インド、マダガスカル、アフリカに残されている。近年、この造山帯から従来の報告よりも古い約6.5億年前の熱イベントが確認されつつある。これは、クーンガ造山帯もまた大陸衝突および局所的な分裂をともないながら、1億年以上の長い時間をかけて徐々に超大陸へと成長した可能性を暗示するものである。そこで本研究では、南極からインド、アフリカ地域に産出する高度変成岩の岩石学的・年代学的研究結果をもとに、クーンガ造山帯の形成年代を再検討し、当該地域のテクトニクスを再構築することにより、ゴンドワナ超大陸形成の新しいモデルを提示することを目的とする。
